World Wide Packaging wins Plastic Tube of the Year, Best Personal Care Tube of the Year and Most Innovative Tube of the Year

FLORHAM PARK, NJ – World Wide Packaging, Inc. (WWP) a leading provider of cosmetic packaging components, was the big winner at the Tube Council’s annual Ted Klein Tube of the Year 2007 Competition, winning the top award in three categories and all the awards given to plastic tubes.

World Wide Packaging’s Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Jeffrey Hayet, says, “World Wide Packaging is the personal care, cosmetic and skin care industry’s leader in tube packaging. We also create more customized tubes than any other company in the world. It is most gratifying that the Tube Council has recognized and acknowledged World Wide Packaging and rewarded us for our product innovation, creativity and technical excellence.”

World Wide Packaging’s winning tube creations are:
Plastic Tube of the Year: WWP won this award for the tube they created for Del Labs’ Sally Hansen Gentle Peel for Rough Lips product. The tube body features 100% hot stamp coverage including over the shoulder, which is unusual in the industry. A secondary hot stamping band was also applied on the custom cap. The flocked shower head applicator features a unique shut off/on valve system, and the intricate applicator insert is comprised of five parts.

Best Personal Care Tube of the Year: This award was given to WWP for the completely unique tube they created for Mary Kay’s TimeWise® Targeted Action™ Line Reducer. The applicator tips that are typically found on tubes are made of high density polyethylene and injection molded to the sleeve. Such tips are fine for lip applications, but are much too rigid to be used on the delicate eye area, which is where the product was designed to be used. The silicone tip applicator created by WWP is soft and precise. It’s ideal for the sensitive skin around the eyes and enables the user to easily target small problem areas. The innovation – and the biggest challenge - was attaching the silicone tip securely to the small 16mm tube, without it coming loose or leaking. WWP developed a collar to secure the silicone tip to the head of the tube and used a five layer co-extruded tube sleeve to prevent product loss. A custom molded and sprayed cap was developed, which incorporated a beefed up pintel seal to further prevent product from escaping out of the silicone tip’s orifice. Just below the tip there’s a valve actuator to regulate the amount of product dispensed for greater control and ease of application.

Most Innovative Tube of the Year: This award was presented to WWP for the 100% customized tube they created for Avon’s ANEW Clinical Spider Vein Therapy product. The angular shape and shallow depth of the tube gives the product a lean, ‘clinical’ appeal, which is consistent with the product’s image. The head of the one piece tube is triangular in shape, with hard edges that you would not expect in a tube. But the cap of the tube is what makes it truly extraordinary. The cap was designed to meet Avon’s exacting packaging requirements and is one of the most complex cap ever commercially produced. The application of metal over the polyprophelyne shell of the cap alone, required a total of 14 different machine processes to produce. In accordance with Avon’s vision that it be a push/pull cap, World Wide Packaging designed the cap to include a flexible plug that squeezes into the tube’s orifice when the cap is closed. Once inside the orifice, the pintel expands slightly for an especially tight seal. The cap was tested in a vacuumized laboratory for effectiveness and was approved by Avon for global distribution.

The judges met in August to examine and evaluate the entries. The tubes were judged on package graphics, decoration, shape, closure, texture, ease-of-use, consumer appeal and technical merit. There were approximately 28 separate entries for each category. The top award of the competition, the coveted Ted Klein Tube of the Year award for best overall package, will be announced at the HBA Global Expo in September.

One of the judges, Jeff Wass, Avon’s Director of Packaging, says, “World Wide Packaging is truly visionary: A company that consistently thinks ‘outside of the box’ and explores all the possibilities to come up with the most innovative, complex tubes in the industry. If a company is looking for a custom tube that is one-of-a-kind and so unique it can actually brand a product, World Wide Packaging is the way to go.”

The Tube Council is a not-for-profit trade organization representing and promoting businesses engaged in producing products or services related to the collapsible squeeze tube industry.
